3.1       Introduction

The motion of power from prime mover to machine, or from one shaft to the other may be transmitted by belts, chains or gears. Belts and ropes are used when the two shafts are at a long distance. Belts and ropes are mounted on the pulleys and transmit motion due to friction. Chains and gears are used when the drive is rigid, without any slip and the two shafts are at a small distance. The two gear wheels mounted on two shafts are directly connected. When such a connections is not possible due to the large diameters of gear wheels, they are connected by chains.

3.2       Power Transmission Methods

Power is transmitted through:

i) Belts,        ii) Ropes,             iii) Chains,       iv) Gears
